By July 10, 2024No Comments

Russell Bevan is a native Texan, born and raised, spending his early childhood growing up in East Texas and then later a small town just south of Dallas. After graduating high school, Russell briefly attended Tyler Junior College before finding a calling to serve in the United States Marine Corps where he spent the next 9 years as an Electronics Maintenance Technician.

During his service, Russell obtained an Associates of Science degree in Computer Science from Hawaii Pacific University and a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Security from Western Governors University. After leaving the service in 2012, he would secure various roles throughout the IT sector gaining invaluable knowledge in the world of software solutioning, development, networking, cloud infrastructure, telephony, and IT operations. This ultimately led Russell on the path to join the SpinSci team in September 2022 as a Solution Architect and now an Engineering Manager.

Fun Facts
My total high school graduating class in 2002 contained a whopping 48 students. I was once approached by a random woman on a plane leaving Las Vegas to swap my economy seat for her First-class seat. Without hesitation and with zero awareness, I jumped at the opportunity. As it turned out, the woman was Kelly Clarkson, a global Country music superstar.

Tell us one extraordinary thing that you have never done and would like to do?
I have travelled quite a bit and I’ve seen and done some extraordinary things, but the world is vast, and the possibilities are endless, so I’ve always wanted to take a year and just travel. There are far too many things in the world to experience outside of the bubble we tend to keep ourselves in.

What are a few of your favorite hobbies and interests?
There are always the cliché answers including spending time with my kids and animals, etc., but those should go without saying. I love to play golf, basketball, softball, and even chess in my spare time. ♟️ Huge movie and comedy buff. I’m also an avid Texas Hold ’em poker player and I have travelled to Las Vegas to compete in the World Series of Poker for the last 4 years.

What kind of music do you like?
Music is a vibe thing for me, so it depends on the setting and the current mood. I could be blaring Eminem or Lil Wayne to get fired up, Of Monsters and Men or Imagine Dragons to work, Blink 182 or Green Day for a bit of nostalgia, and obviously the Southern Rock and Country music you’d expect from a native Texan like Whiskey Myers, Stoney LaRue, Willie Nelson, George Strait, William Clark Green, Shane Smith, and many more.

What cuisine do you enjoy the most?
The obvious answer is that I could eat Cajun or Mexican cuisine any day of the week. If I had to pick a single dish it would be Redfish topped with Crawfish Etouffee. After living in Hawaii, I’d have to add some of the local cuisine to my favorites list including Musubi and Chicken Katsu. 🍛

Do you love pets, and do you own one?
I’m a big dog lover and I have 3 of my own. I’ve apparently passed that love on to my kids who seem to come to me every week making promises of unlimited chores if only I will adopt the latest cute puppy they’ve come across.

Who has been your inspiration in life?
I’ve always been inspired by success stories that started from nothing or where the individual had to overcome some seemingly insurmountable adversity, but I’d be amiss not to mention some of the tech visionaries of the 90’s and early 2000’s that are responsible for peaking my interest in computers and technology like Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, Sean Parker, the late Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg. 🖥️

What do you like about SpinSci?
I thoroughly enjoy the challenges that come with taking a set of requirements and adopting those into a fully designed and developed solution. Whether it be customer projects or developing new features for our products, SpinSci has really allowed me to utilize my complete toolset and previous experience.

What do you think makes our team culture unique?
The SpinSci team is extremely diverse with employees from all over the world that come with a wide range of knowledge and skillsets. There are not many questions that can’t be answered by someone, somewhere within the SpinSci team no matter the topic.

What is something about yourself that others don’t know?
Although I gained some formal schooling later in life, mostly everything I know has been self-taught. I was given my first computer at 12, which was broken. I spent the next 2 years learning everything I could about computers and how to fix that computer. It’s still broken in a dumpster somewhere, but the knowledge I gained trying to fix it really honed my focus on technology. In the early 2000’s, while still in high school, I took several jobs developing business websites for friends, family, and local businesses.

What are your dreams and aspirations in life?
For the most part, I’ve been able to live my dreams and aspirations. I’ve been successful in the career path that I wanted, I’ve travelled all over the world, and I’m a father of two amazing kids. My focus now is setting them up with a foundation to start fulfilling their own dreams.

Describe one of your favorite work memories
It was December 2022, my first holiday party as an employee of SpinSci and the party was coming to an end. Carlton and I had requested an Uber, but after a 20 minute wait the driver never showed. After a quick check of the maps, we identified that it’s only 1.5 miles and decided it would be quicker to just walk. It’s important to mention that, while we are in Texas, it was December, and it does get cold. Around mid-30’s Fahrenheit to be exact. Carlton’s phone must have needed calibration, and this 1.5-mile walk turned into a 1.5-hour trek through the frozen tundra of Dallas. Luckily, we survived any hypothermia or frostbite. The moral of the story is that sometimes the road less travelled is less travelled for a reason. Wait for the Uber.

What is your favorite movie?
Like I said, I’m a big fan of movies and I don’t think I can name just one and not even one genre. Some of the all-time favorites would be Goodfellas, The Color of Money, Rounders, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Happy Gilmore, and the list goes on and on.

Where’s one place you’d like to visit?
I’ve always wanted to visit the Maldives and stay in an over-water cabin. I’m currently trying to convince SpinSci leadership that this is the ideal location for our next workshop. 🏝️

What’s one item you can’t live without?
I absolutely hate to say it, but it’s my phone. It has proven to be the only consistent planning and organization tool that I have. I have a very bad habit of writing on sticky notes, placing them in places where I know I will see them, and then never seeing them again. If I add a reminder in my phone, I know it’s not going anywhere.

Why SpinSci? Share 1-3 sentences on your personal mission and how SpinSci helps fulfill it:
As I mentioned previously, my experience in technology is quite broad and SpinSci has really given me the freedom and opportunity to utilize all of that experience and knowledge in our products. There is also an overwhelming sense of value and accomplishment that stems from building products that are so vital in healthcare organizations and the patient journey. 🏥

What is one thing about SpinSci you wish the whole world could know?
Without question it would be the amount of time, effort, and soul that our employees put into ensuring that our customers’ requirements and satisfaction are met. You hear the saying about “blood, sweat, and tears” quite often, but that’s an understatement to the amount of passion and devotion the SpinSci team puts into our projects.

What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Laundry. I say, as I stare at what seems to be a Mt. Everest sized mound of dirty clothes in front of me.
