The recently concluded HIMSS Texas Regional Conference brought together healthcare professionals, industry leaders, and technology enthusiasts for an immersive experience. The annual conference featured over 50 speakers covering topics ranging from the latest trends in healthcare to how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the way healthcare is delivered. 

SpinSci’s VP of Sales, Forrest Salsberry, joined the Avaya Fireside Chat on “Reimagining the Future of Patient Engagement – Chat GPT & Beyond“. The session delved into the transformative power of advanced technologies, including Chat GPT, and its impact on patient engagement.

  • A Vision for Patient Engagement 

The fireside chat commenced with an exploration of the evolving landscape of patient engagement. Panelists emphasized the business-critical need for healthcare providers to adopt innovative technologies that can enhance communication, personalization, and overall patient experiences. They highlighted the potential of Chat GPT and similar AI-powered solutions to revolutionize the way patients interact with healthcare systems. 

In a study led by John Ayers, a public health researcher at the University of California San Diego, two sets of written responses to real-world patient questions were compared – One set written by physicians and the other by ChatGPT. Both sets of answers were evaluated by a panel of licensed healthcare professionals and the panel preferred ChatGPT’s responses 79% of the time. 

  • Leveraging Chat GPT in Healthcare 

The conversation shifted to the practical applications of Chat GPT in healthcare settings, particularly how providers are implementing AI chatbots to improve patient engagement. By utilizing natural language processing and machine learning algorithms, these chatbots can address frequently asked questions, giving patients the answers they need quickly while reducing the administrative tasks of care teams allowing more focus on care delivery. Although automation offers additional advantages to scale across healthcare, the panelist all agreed on the importance of maintaining a balance between automation and human touch to deliver seamless and empathetic care. 

When asked the question “In what ways can AI chatbots and technology improve patient engagement and satisfaction with healthcare services?” Forrest answered “You have a conversational AI which is really predicated on patient access from an engagement perspective: calling in, chatting, etc. and you also have cognitive AI that can improve efficiencies when talking to actual humans. AI chatbots can crawl multiple datasets and produce something that is unique.” 

  • Overcoming Challenges and Ensuring Privacy 

As healthcare providers, we have a responsibility to consider the necessary safety protocols and guidelines when exploring and implementing new and innovative technology.  More importantly, we must factor in governance for responsible use to ensure the safety of the patients and the care delivery teams.  Adopting advanced technology is not without challenges, and Forrest highlighted the importance of data privacy and security in handling sensitive patient information. Everyone emphasizes the need for robust governance frameworks and compliance with regulatory standards to ensure patient confidentiality and trust is a top priority.
