Meet Nick – Our VP of Business Development

By April 23, 2024April 26th, 2024No Comments

Nick Kagal was born in Sunderland, England, and lived in Newcastle as a child which has led him to be a big Newcastle United fan. He moved to Detroit for a couple of years before traveling to India for two years by himself in 5th and 6th grade. He moved to Denton, Texas at the end of 6th grade and grew up in the college town.

Nick played tennis for his Denton High School and then for Austin College, a small liberal arts college in Sherman, Texas. Nick was actually pre-med, and he spent a semester in medical school but decided it wasn’t for him and took a business route to healthcare earning his MBA at Texas A&M University (where his son is currently a student).

Nick began his career in the Dallas area working for several health systems in leadership roles, and then moved to the technology side in consulting, account management, sales, and customer success roles. Along with his son, who is a public health major, he has a daughter who is completing her first year of medical school at Texas Tech University.

Nick joined the SpinSci team in November of 2020 and has held several roles including leading marketing, business development, and customer success. He is now focused on driving business development at our organization. What does that mean? Well, he’s helping to develop partnerships with strategic partners (UCaaS/CCaaS/AI/KM), EHR partners, channel partners (VARs), and others. His goal is to develop these partnerships and enable them with the tools and knowledge they need to successfully align with SpinSci’s strategic goals.

Fun Facts
I love sports and in addition to tennis, I’ve also played competitive baseball and ice hockey. Now my focus has returned to tennis and long-distance cycling. I’m a HUGE fan of local sports teams including the Mavericks, Stars, Cowboys, World Champion Rangers, Texas A&M University and FC Dallas.

Tell us one extraordinary thing that you have never done and would like to do?
One of my goals (and my friends) is to hike to base camp at Everest. We hope to plan this in the next couple of years. My friends and I often take guys trips, and my biggest hike achievement so far is climbing half-dome in Yosemite.

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Dua Lipa and ice cream. 🍦

What are a few of your favorite hobbies and interests?
I love music and I play guitar and bass. I’m in a local “Dad” band, Sonic Dissonance, and we play mainly rock covers.

What kind of music do you like?
I love the Foo Fighters, the Beatles, Queen, Zeppelin, U2, the Who, Fleetwood Mac, the Killers, the Cars, the Police, the Cult, the Struts, Collective Soul, Better Than Ezra and other classic and alternative rock bands. I also enjoy some heavy metal like Metallica and Judas Priest. I try to keep up with newer bands so I’ve been listening to Royal Bloods, Mammoth WVH, Mac Saturn, Modest Mouse, Nothing But Thieves, Foster the People, and Maneskin. I’m a big concert guy and try to catch the Foo Fighters whenever I can, whether in Dallas or somewhere I’m traveling. Over the past year, I’ve seen Madonna, Kiss, U2 at the Sphere in Vegas, Billy Idol, the Killers, Beck, Queen, Maneskin, the Scorpions, Duran Duran, the Goo Goo Dolls, Paul McCartney, and more.

What cuisine do you enjoy the most?
I love all kinds of food. My favorites are probably sushi (the Tribeca roll at Oishi in Dallas is my favorite), Mediterranean/Greek, and good Tex-Mex (we have a local Tex-Mex place, Lita’s, where they have Indian-Mexican fusion dishes like Paneer Tacos & Chicken Tikka fajitas). I have a weakness for ice cream and just discovered Honey Sopapilla ice cream from HEB… not good news for me. I also love local craft breweries and Scotch, bourbon, & some good tequilas/mezcals.

If you had to choose an anthem for your life, which song would it be and why?
That’s easy – Times Like These by the Foo Fighters. To me it’s a song of rebirth, and I actually have its soundwave tattooed on my arm.

Do you have any pets?
I have a 13 year old American Eskimo named Zane who unfortunately is now blind. He somehow gets around and can still find the doggie door and let himself out. Though I’ve always been a dog person, I have learned to love my daughter’s two cats – Winnie and Jade. They’re my grand-kitties.

Who has been your inspiration in life?
My dad has always been my inspiration. He moved to England and then the US to create a better life for his family. He was a humble and self-less man who always looked out for others. His legacy survives him in the North Texas area as he was one of the founders of the Indian Classical Music Circle and played a huge role with my mother in developing & supporting the DFW Hindu Temple. He was a huge support for many local Indian students at the University of North Texas, and our home was a frequent stop for artists like Ravi Shankar and Zahkir Hussein. My claim to fame – Ravi Shankar slept in my bed while I was away in college.

What do you like about SpinSci?
SpinSci is not a start-up, but we retain that entrepreneurial spirit. Everyone has the opportunity to develop and expand their own roles, and there’s really nothing you can’t take on. It’s awesome to hear our partners and customers talk about the critical need for our solutions, and we’re always looking forward to how we can further positively impact the patient journey.

What do you think makes our team culture unique?
Rajit, our CEO, has developed a culture focused on teamwork. Everyone’s welcome and our activities and events are often open to former employees, partners, customers, and more. They’re all seen as part of the SpinSci extended family.

Something about yourself others don’t know?
I was Chuck E. Cheese in high school. I dressed up as a giant rat and entertained kids and sometimes stood out on the street waving customers into our store. I had a great time working there since many of my high school friends worked there with me. 🐭

My other high school jobs included working at an auto mechanic shop, slinging burgers for a month at Jack-in-the-Box, and delivering pizza dressed in World War I flight gear for the Amazing Flying Pizza Company.

What are your dreams and aspirations in life?
I want to be sure that my kids are successful and happy in what they do and accomplish their dreams.

What is your favorite movie?
I love most 80’s John Cusack movies. I’m a big sci-fi fan and enjoyed the last Dune flick. I also love my Marvel movies (I was a big comic book collector as a youth, and recently sold my collection for a nice amount). But I also love silly stupid movies – I could watch Dumb & Dumber, Stepbrothers, Blades of Glory, Talladega Nights and Elf multiple times (you get the Will Ferrell love there?).

Where’s a place you’d like to visit?
I love the ocean, mountains, and beaches. I need to go to Costa Rica, but I’d also like to visit Everest base camp, Bali, Spain, New Zealand, and the Maldives. I love SCUBA diving so I’d like to visit the Barrier Reef in Australia at some point. I’d also like to ski in the Italian Alps.

What’s one item you can’t live without?
My Gibson Dave Grohl DG-335 guitar. I bought it a while back, it’s one of 200 made. I love the sound and feel of the guitar. I’ve got a decent collection of guitars, and all guitar players know that the formula to the number of guitars you should own is n+1 😊

Why SpinSci? Share 1-3 sentences on your personal mission and how SpinSci helps fulfill it:
I have a strong personal mission to improve the health of our communities. This has been only strengthened by recent personal events in my life. SpinSci helps support this by improving access to care for patients at our customer sites. We also want to be able to help improve patient outcomes by allowing patients to access and participate in their own patient access workflows.

What is one thing about SpinSci you wish the whole world could know?
Everyone should know and understand the passion that each team member holds for driving and supporting the success of our clients.
